Holiday, from the words "holy day", is a day set aside for special observance, either religious or secular. Holidays are often marked by public ceremonies, such as parades and religious services, as well as by rest and recreation. Generosity and sharing are functional aspects of some holidays; most holidays are meant to engender a sense of union and of "belonging" among the participants. The festivals of various ancient civilizations shared certain themes--fertility, death, resurrection, harvest, and thanksgiving--that are recognized in modern holidays around the world.

Holidays and holiday celebrations have always been an important part of my family's life. As one ages, the memories which are most vivid from youth is usually associated with a holiday of some sort. Memories are important - and holidays do that for us. We have much to learn about holidays. Why we celebrate them as we do, their significance in history, and their significance to us in general.

Memories involve all the senses. The smell of pumpkin pie baking on a crisp cool day can bring about memories of Thanksgiving, or the smell of hot dogs grilling outside and baked beans brings remembrance of Fourth of July celebrations of the past. Hearing 'Onward Christian Soldiers' or 'The Old Rugged Cross' brings back memories of Easters past - the 5am searches for the baskets, spilling the orange juice down my new outfit every year and so on. Tasting pepermint candy brings back memories of Christmas past, as does seeing bubble lights or icicles on Christmas trees. Touching a baseball brings back those Memorial and Labor day family picnics when the kids would play outside at my grandparents farm. So many memories to make one smile.
