The creation of Father's Day is attributerd to Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd. During a Mother's Day sermon
in 1909 Sonora came up with the idea of a day devoted to letting fathers know how special they are. Sonora's
mother had died when she was young and she was raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart.
Sonora wanted to let her father know how special he was to her. He had made all the sacrifices necessary to
raise her and she felt that he was a very courageous and loving father. Since her father was born in June, she
chose to have the first Father's Day celebration on June 19, 1909 in Spokane, Washington.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. The rose was chosen
as the "official" flower of Father's Day. Children are to wear a red rose if their father is living and a white
rose if their father has passed away.
